Anxiety

Asian lady with eyes closed and worried expressionWhat is anxiety?

Anxiety involves worry and/or fear of a future negative outcome that you consider to be dangerous or a threat.

Anxiety symptoms include feelings of:

  • Uneasiness
  • Distress
  • Apprehension
  • Dread

Physical signs of our anxiety may be present, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach
  •  Tight muscles
  • Sweating

A low to moderate degree of anxiety can improve our performance, such as when we realise we need to prepare for a presentation or test, or ensure our survival like when we are driving and we reduce our speed at an intersection because we’ve sensed a car approaching.

Anxiety becomes a problem when:

  • It is at such high levels that it is difficult to concentrate and perform
  • It is experienced for a long period of time, or
  • When there is no reasonable basis for the anxiety symptoms
